Housing sector set for sustained growth
12/05/2010
The private housebuilding sector was identified as a beacon of optimism at a seminar held to consider the future of the industry by CIMCIG.
Dr Noble Francis of the Construction Products Association highlighted the recent steady increase in the number of housing starts and predicted continued growth over the medium and long term.
In his assessment, the sheer scale of the shortfall in the number of dwellings will protect housebuilding from the effects of a lack of mortgage credit and from the widely anticipated cuts in public sector investment and employment.
Other speakers focused on the impact of increasing pressure to improve sustainability on the design both of individual dwellings and of communities in the years ahead. The drive for sustainability is now widely accepted to be a fundamental part of any housing plan.
Predicting the Conservative/Liberal government, Andrew Howard of Hard Hat observed that the more extreme proposals from either party are likely to be shelved in the interests of consensual government.
