Housebuilding on the up?
20/11/2009
The number of new houses being built has risen to its highest level for more than a year, according to the NHBC.
The FT reports that work was started on 25,000 new properties over the three months to October, 27 per cent more than the same period last year.
New housing starts also rose against the three months to August, up 2.5 per cent, which supports the optimistic view of many in the industry.
The rise in new house-building was largely underpinned by private sector investments, which rose 46 per cent over the year, compared with a modest 3 per cent increase in publicly funded building.
London and the south-east led the way in terms of volume, with work starting on about 8,000 homes. The largest percentage increase came in the north-east. The 870 starts represented an increase of more than 300 per cent compared with the same period last year.
The NHBC data came as Barratt, Persimmon and Bovis all made positive noises in financial announcements.
